Year 5 Cor Burn Field Trip
Our Year 5 classes all went on a field trip to the Cor Burn as part of their work on habitats and life cycles in science. Simone from the Tyne Rivers Trust demonstrated how to take a kick sample of the sediment and living organisms on the stream bed. The pupils then collected their own samples and placed them carefully in their collecting trays. It was fabulous to see how excited the students were as they identified eels, fish, mayfly larvae, caddisfly larvae and many more mini-beasts using their classification sheets. We decided that the stream was in a healthy condition as there was so much biodiversity. Daniel in 5B scored the trip with an incredible 5000 out of 10.
Simone also came to visit out Water Explorers in school to discuss the amazing life cycle of the mayfly in more detail. This activity helped the club go to the top of the Water Explorer leader board as they completed the stream assessment mission.
