Sports Review - December 2013
All children started following a revised curriculum of football and hockey in the first half term. They also made a start on fitness and rugby, (contact Y7 & Y8, tag and touch for Y5&6). At the start of this term each class was given the opportunity to vote on the sports that they would prefer to take part in after Christmas, with the aim of allowing some individuality in activities and encouraging student voice within the subject.
Interschool School Sports competition
The children have been split into two houses; Housesteads and Chesters, for the purposes of PE. At the end of each activity they put into practice the skills that they have learned in competitive fixtures. Each individual child has a part to play in the success of their team. All children seem to have engaged in the idea and are very much into the team spirit which was shown in an assembly showing highlights and results.
Extra Curricular clubs 1st Half term
Extra curricular clubs were extensive in the first half term as can be seen below. These were changed after half term to tie in with local competition and ‘seasons’ for activities. These clubs are Rugby, all years, boys and girls, Hockey, all years, boys and girls, dodgeball, all years boys and girls and we have also run a dance workshop after school. The activities also allowed more Y5 children to participate in extra curricular clubs.
Clubs
There have been 3 major competitions recently. 38 children attended the area schools rugby tournament with 2 girl’s teams made up of pupils from Y7 & Y8 and a boys team from Y7 and Y8 team. All teams recorded a win in the friendly tournament and have demonstrated good progress within the sport. The next boy’s tournament will be in January.
5 Rowing machines were borrowed for 2 ½ days allowing pupils to participate in a new activity. This was conducted as an interschool competition which has added to the football and hockey results from the first half term. Interschool rugby is also taking place this week and the scores will be presented in the New Year.
High numbers of pupils attended the lunch time rowing club and after the success of this, 8 pupils represented the school in an area competition ith 4 of them qualifying for the next round which will take place in February. 29 pupils attended the area cross country, with 13 Corbridge pupils achieving top 16 places meaning that they qualify for the next level of competition.
Funding
Investment in equipment has been made to cater for the pupils choice of sporting activity for the new year. This should see more diversity and choice in the activities that pupils participate in during curriculum time, including, Table Tennis, Netball, Dance, Gymnastics and Handball. A dance
teacher has also been found to assist in delivering dance both in lessons and in extra curricular time.
