Curriculum Intent - EnglishAs a key communication subject, English here at Corbridge is vibrant, innovative and alive. We seek to inspire a love of language and literature in all of our pupils, to ensure they have the grammatical and structural knowledge to create a wide range of texts independently, and to equip them with the cultural capital they need to be successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens.

We have planned and sequenced an ambitious curriculum, to capture our pupils’ attention, help them develop the skills they need and teach them the knowledge that underpins our subject, so they are ready for the next step in their educational life. It is a curriculum that is broad - covering a wide range of fiction and non-fiction, works that are both modern and from our literary heritage and encompassing prose, poetry and drama - balanced - embracing reading, writing and spoken language - and inclusive – exploring wide-ranging issues, events and context and adapted to suit each class’s needs.
In KS2, our pupils are taught a rigorous programme of reading, writing, grammar, punctuation and spelling to not only equip them for their SATS, but to ensure they have the tools to be good readers and writers for life. Throughout the key stage, we encourage pupils to read widely, to develop the skill of reading fluently and with expression and meaning, to experiment with a variety of written styles and to practise using their grammatical acquisitions. We adapt our curriculum to suit the needs of each class, providing extra challenge for those with potential to be at greater depth, and adapting to both our planning and teaching for those with special educational needs. We meet regularly to ensure we are consistent in our practice and our planning, and our progress is assessed alongside the DFE framework for KS2.
In KS3, our curriculum forms a solid foundation for the knowledge and skills needed for KS4 and for a life-time of reading and writing. We sequence our teaching to ensure a smooth transition to high school: presenting our pupils with challenging texts; modelling reading for a range of purposes skimming and scanning, fluency and understanding; demonstrating how to work in timed conditions; how to be independent learners; self-editors and crafters of their work; note-takers; developing critical thinking, analytical skills and creative expertise.
We enrich English here at Corbridge by offering opportunities for pupils to: see a play in performance; take part in a school production; recite poetry and learn by heart; meet authors and poets; take part in festivals of speech and drama; join reading groups; visit places that are contextually relevant and important in our studies; write for our school chronicle; enter writing competitions; visit book fairs; use our excellent library, every day; become librarians; borrow new and classic texts regularly; learn dramatic techniques and perform in front of their peers; read for pleasure and write for purpose.
As a teaching team, we are passionate about English and about the value of our subject in our pupils’ lives; we seek to enthuse, encourage and grow our pupils’ love of English throughout the four years they are with us, and for life.
