Curriculum Intent - ArtWe are all different and through our experiences of the world, we have a unique way of understanding and responding to it. Sharing the way we experience the world, often, is an extension of our character and personality. Through Art, we can express our thoughts, emotions and feelings and can communicate personal ideas that cannot be portrayed by words alone. So often in education pupils feel under pressure to perform and can feel overwhelmed by the requirements of the national curriculum. Here at Corbridge Middle School, we have created an environment where pupils can be inspired and imaginative through using colour, form, texture and different materials to communicate what they see, feel and think. Through creative and practical activities pupils are taught the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to make informed judgments and decisions, becoming actively involved in shaping environments. They explore ideas and meanings in the work of artists, crafts people and designers and learn about the diverse roles and functions in contemporary life and in different times and cultures.

Many of the topics in Years 5 and 6 are skill based where pupils learn about the elements of art. They will investigate different media and processes and build up confidence and independence in using these. Pupils will learn how to take pride in their work by improving their presentation and taking time to achieve success. The many different elements and processes are revisited throughout the different topics and projects and progress can be seen clearly throughout their sketchbooks.
In Years 7 and 8, pupils build upon the knowledge and skills they have learnt previously. Termly projects will use elements and processes to achieve final outcomes in a variety of media and materials. It is clear that pupils have more confidence by the time they are in KS3. There is more focus on our whole school values and becoming more independent in their learning.
Throughout their time at Corbridge, pupils will be given many Art based enrichment opportunities. We are an inclusive school and all work produced is valued and appreciated. Around the school, their work is celebrated through displays and a gallery where anyone can look and admire the diverse range of opportunities given.
By the time pupils are ready to go to the high school, they are confident individuals that are equipped with the relevant skills and knowledge to pursue this subject further if they choose.
